On Wednesday 27th March, the Gozo Ministry Hall, Victoria, hosted the first of a number of recitals being held at this venue. This was a 4-hand piano recital by two duos: Mro Giuseppe Fricelli, the well-renowned piano teacher at the Conservatorio L. Cherubini of Florence, and his top student Daria Aleshina and Sara Palumbo and Alessandria Di Nardo, another two of Fricelli’s students. Indeed Fricelli, Aleshina and Palumbo were making a welcome return to Gaulitana: A Festival of Music after their successful appearance last year.
Fricelli and Aleshina appeared in the first part of the recital performing Mira il tuo popolo – an adaptation of a liturgical hymn by Frazzi and Fricelli –, Weber’s 6 Petites pi?ces faciles and Schumann’s 6 Impromptus Bilder aus Osten. The second part of the concert was taken up by Palumbo and Di Nardo who played Ravel’s Ma mère l’oye and Moszkowski’s Habanera.
At the end of the concert, Mro Fricelli thanked Gaulitana artistic director, Mro Colin Attard, for inviting him and his students once again for the festival and presented him with a copy of his recent piano work entitled Budapest. This excerpt, was composed specifically for a concert Fricelli is giving in Budapest in the coming days for the President of Hungary, Jamos Ader – to whom the work is dedicated. Fricelli than surprised all by playing the work as an encore – which proved to be its world premier and indeed an anteprima of the Hungarian concert.
The festival now continues on Sunday with the first large-scale concert entitled Gloria!…..A Baroque Celebration. This choral-instrumental concert features the Gaulitanus Choir, Italian solo singers Aurora Tirotta (soprano) and Lara Rotili (mezzo-soprano), Gozitan up-and-coming violinist Pierre Louis Attard accompanied by a chamber ensemble directed by Colin Attard in Bach’s Concerto for Violin in A mIn and Vivaldi’s famous Gloria. The concert is being held at St. Francis Church, Victoria @ 20.00hrs.
