Gaulitana: A Festival of Music kicked off last Sunday 11th March with a sacred concert at St. Augustine Church, Victoria. The concert held in collaboration with the Victoria Local Council featured the Gaulitanus Choir – which organizes the festival
The sacred works performed were all in the english language. The principal work performed was a premiere for the maltese islands, namely “Easter Trilogy”, a cantata in 3 suites for choir and narrators by American composer Benjamin Harlan (narrators: Sue Scantleberry and Paul Barnes). At certain moments towards the end, this also included the participation of the audience. The other works performed were 2 medleys of British / American sacred songs arranged by Colin Attard and Colin and Stephen Attard respectively entitled “The Cross of Redemption” and “Be Not Afraid!” and Charles Gounod’s “O Divine Redeemer”, also arranged by Colin Attard. These featured choir’s soloists Rita Dimech, Annabelle Zammit, Marthese Borg, Francesca Sciberras, Terry Shaw and Joseph Buttigieg. As alwaysStephen Attard accompanied with the choir’s founder-director Colin Attard at the helm.
The sizeable audience was led by Victoria Mayor Dr. Samuel and Mrs. Azzopardi, the Hon. Frederick and Mrs. Azzopardi and ex-Speaker of the House of Representatives Mr. Anton and Mrs. Tabone.
This week the festival continues with two other events
1. Jazzin’ it up where Maltese trumpeter Adrian (Russu) Brincat, accompanied by Lino Cauchi (piano) and Mario Abela (bass), will jazz it up at the Kempinski Hotel, San Lawrenz on Friday 16th @ 21.00hrs – a evening so different from the other events in the festival where one can relax and enjoy a drink while listening to top Jazz
2. 2 Violins ….a cappella on Sunday 18th @ 19.30hrs at the Jesus of Nazareth Church, Xaghra, the Gaudos Duo featuring Hungarian violinists David Land and Emese Toth will give a recital of duets ranging from the Baroque to the 20th century. At one point the Duo will be joined by guest Canadian guitarist Sean Gurd. The concert will be held in collaboration with the Xaghra Local Council.
