The only lunchtime recital in this year’s edition of Gaulitana: A Festival of Music, which now ran into its seventh and final week, was held at the Gozo Ministry’s Hall on Wednesday May 1 at 11.30hrs. The concert was due to feature British soprano Emma Darling accompanied by Gozitan pianist Stephen Attard. However, unfortunately, Darling had to cancel her participation due to the fact that she was hospitalised at the last minute. The organisers acted quickly to find a replacement and indeed had Bulgarian soprano Andriana Yordanova and Askhenian pianist Sofia Narmania on board for the recital. Indeed while the organisers wish a very speedy recovery to Darling, they wish to thank Yordanova and Narmania for stepping in at very short notice.
In reality the recital was a hugely successful one, with a warm and very appreciative audience present. The repertoire consisted of a series of operatic arias – whether Baroque, Romantic or 20th century, and some lighter vocal stuff – nicely performed by soprano Yordanova. On her part, Namanja magnificently performed 3 contrasting piano pieces by Chopin, Rachmaninov and Gershwin, thus giving respite to the singer. A long final applause resulted in a fitting encore.
The festival ends of Friday with a concert from the musical theatre at the Kempinski, San Lawrenz.
