The Gaulitanus Choir has concluded the celebrations marking its 20th anniversary with a social held at the Hotel Calypso, Marsalforn, Gozo on Tuesday 28th December. A good number of choir members and their families attended the very enjoyable event, which was preceded by some Christmas caroling at the hotel’s restaurant.
A special cake with the choir’s logo was also prepared for the occasion. After addressing those present and also thanking all past and present members for their service to the choir, the choir’s founder-director, Mro. Colin Attard, cut the cake together with the three choir members who were in the first Gaulitanus line-up 20 years back and who are still active and regular choir members today. Indeed Marie Louise Attard, Josianne Callus (in 1990 still Hili) and Marvic Bajada were there on the 27th April 1990 during a musico-literary soiree held at the Qala Parish Chuch, when the choir was appearing under the name of Gaulitanus for the first time.
Two other members present at the social were also within the choir’s ranks during that time. Yet current accompanist Stephen Attard was ‘redundant’ for the choir’s two big events in 1990 since on both occasions the choir was accompanied by an orchestra! On the other hand Lelina Attard, the maestro’s mother, who formed part of the first line-up is now an associate member of the choir.
Three other current members of the choir present for the social were also there 20 years back, but they had only joined the choir for its second commitment – again at Qala Parish Church on the 6th July1990 for the oratorio Guzeppi ta’ Nazaret. These are Stephanie Buttigieg (in 1990 still Vella), Frances Galea and Rita Dimech.
The several other members present at the social had joined the choir throughout the years, ranging from some who have been in the choir for 19 years or so and others who have just joined during the last few weeks. This in itself is representative of the metamorphosis which the Gauliatnus Choir has had throughout these 20 years.
Ad multos annos!
