The Gaulitanus Choir once again participated in this year’s edition of Lejlet Lapsi – Notte Gozitana organized by the Gozo Cultural office during the first weekend of June. In fact on Saturday 4th June the choir presented A Sacred Concert at Savina Church, Victoria. This happened to be the first time that the choir sang in this small church in central Victoria.

The varied programme kicked off with A Light Mass by American composers Foley, Dufford and Schutte as arranged by Colin Attard. The soloist was Annabelle Zammit. The style changed completely with two chorales from John Stainer’s The Crucifixion namely I adore Thee and For the love of Jesus specifically chosen since Savina church is an adoration church.

The choir then sang a medley of several Ave Maria compiled for the occasion by Colin Attard. Original Ave Maria by Arcadelt, Puccini and Schubert were juxtaposed with settings of Ave Maria by Mascagni and Beethoven. The soloists in this medley were Annabelle Zammit, Patricia Buttigieg and Joseph Buttigieg.

Another change of style resulted in the choir singing the awesome Cantique de Jean Racine by Gabriel Faure.

The concert ended with another medley compiled once more for the occasion by Colin Attard. This comprised Dufford’s Be not afraid, Joncas’s On eagle’s wings and Take and eat and the Swedish traditional O Lord my God. Again the soloists in this medley were Annabelle Zammit, Patricia Buttigieg and Joseph Buttigieg.

The choir was conducted by its musical director Colin Attard, with resident accompanist Stephen Attard on the organ. For the mass and the medleys violinist Pierre Louis Attard joined the fray adding sparkle and contrast to the choir’s timbre with his various important contributions.
