Gozo’s Gaulitanus Choir commenced its commitments for the new year, while at the same time concluded the musical events for the festive season, with another edition of its annual End-of-Festive Season Concert. This was held, in collaboration with the Gozo Culture Office, at the Kempinski Hotel, San Lawrenz on Thursday, 6th January 2011.
Entitled Epiphany Joys the concert consisted of a completely secular repertoire with eight medleys of Christmas numbers arranged / transcribed – mostly specifically for the occasion – by the choir’s musical director, Colin Attard. Five contrasted and stylistically-different choral medleys were presented, namely A Ding Dong Christmas, A Waltzing Christmas, A Lilting Christmas, A Spiritual Christmas and A Polka Christmas which showed the choir’s affinity with light music and definitely its versatility. These medleys also prominently and very creditably featured the choir’s soloists Annabelle Zammit, Rita Dimech, Josianne Callus, Marthese Borg, Francesca Sciberras and Joseph Buttigieg. On their part the six soloists also nicely presented their own medley, A Nostalgic Christmas.
A variant to the sung medleys were two other medleys transcribed for violin duo, namely A. Chircop’s A Kissing Red & White Christmas and C. Strommen’s A Swinging Christmas, interpreted with oomph and charm by brothers Jean Noël and Pierre Louis Attard – who were also singing in the choir.
Indeed the artistic director’s decision to differ from the normal Christmas musical fare in Gozo and go for a completely secular repertoire reaped its benefits and the audience could be visibly seen to enjoy all that was being presented.
Of course the performance would not have been the same were it not for the impressive accompaniment provided by the choir’s pianist, Stephen Attard, as well as for the bounce and gusto which conductor Colin Attard transmitted to the forces under his direction.
A Happy New Year to all!!!!!
