Gaulitana: A Festival of Music kicked off last Tuesday with "A Choral Celebration" featuring the Gaulitanus Choir and the visiting Epsom College Chapel Choir. The concert was held at St. Augutine Church, Victoria and held in collaboration with the Victoria Local Council.
The 30-strong Gozitan Choir raised the curtain on the festival by performing the Missa Brevis in honorem Johannis Pauli II by the choir’s own director Colin Attard. This was chosen to celebrate the forthcoming beatification of Pope John Paul II and falso prominently featured the choir’s soloists Rita Dimech (soprano), Marthese Borg (mezzo-soprano), Terry Shaw (tenor), Darren Vella (bass) and Annabelle Zammit (treble). The 47-strong English choir performed a variety of motets, mostly by English composers, ranging from the Baroque to the contemporary.
The two choirs then joined forces for a striking and transcendental finale interpreting Gabriel Faure’s Cantique de Jean Racine. The Gozitan conductor and accompanist took the honour of directing and accompanying the Cantique.
A retiring collection in aid of the Malta Community Chest Fund on the initiative of the Local Council.
The audience was led by Victoria Mayor, Dr. Sameul Azzopardi and included former Speaker & Mrs Anton Tabone with Augustinian monk Fr. Peter Paul Cachia, who had generously supported the event and was very helpful in the organisation, also present.
