The Fifth “End of Season” Concert 2010

Yesterday, the 3rd of January 2010, the Gaulitanus Choir started off its twentieth anniversary by presenting its fifth "End of Season Concert", at the Exhibition Hall in St. Francis Square. People filled the hall to capacity so much so that no were available. Even so, more people continued to arrive for the concert. In order to accomodate the guests chairs had to be borrowed from the nearby St. Francis church and placed att he back of the hall and in the aisle.

The first part of this concert’s programme consisted of a medley of Christmas Carols from the British Isles, sung by the Choir’s soloists. Tenor Fabian Galea started the concert of with a "Sussex Carol," Soprano Maria Grech Magro continued with "Here we come a-wassailing" and Soprano Charlene Borg sung "A little town of Betlehem". Tenor Joseph Calleja continued with "In the bleak mid-winter" followed by "The holly and the ivy" by mezzo-soprano Patricia Buttigieg. Soprano Annabelle Zammit then sung "Out of your sleep" followed by "O men from the fields" sung by Soprano Maria Meilak. Mezzo-Soprano Marthese Borg then sung "A Ney Year carol" and followed by soprano Josianne Callus who sung "Sans Day Carol". The first part of this concert was a Celtic traditional carol "Child in a manger" which was sung by all the soloists.

The second part of the concert was "Reminiscenes of "A ceremony of Carols" played by Mro. Josef Debrincat on the clarinet and Mro. Stephen Attard on the piano.

This was followed by Geoffrey Bush’s "A Christmas Cantata" in nine movements sung by the choir, with the solo part sung by soprano Stephanie Portelli.

Throughout this concert, both the soloists and the choir were accompanied by clarinettist Mro Joseph Debrincat and the pianist Mro. Stephen Attard and conducted by Mro. Colin Attard.

After the concert the guests were treated to a free glass of wine. However an ad hoc collection in aid of the community chest fund was organised from which the choir raised one hundred and sixty six euros.
