The Third Gaulitana: A Festival of Music kicked off yesterday, 6th April, 2009, with Stainer’s "The Crucifixion": which was held at the Xaghra Basilica of the Nativity of Our Lady at 8.00 p.m. This concert was sponsored by the Culture Section of the Gozo Ministry.

This meditation on the sacred passion of the holy Redeemer - words by Rev. J. Sparrow-Simpson, music by John Stainer - is a great work for two male voices tenor and bass together with a mixed choir. Tenor Brian Cefai and bass Albert Buttigieg performed their part well as did the well trained Gaulitanus Choir under the baton of Mro. Colin Attard. The choir’s own male quartet: tenors Terry Shaw, Fr. Joseph Calleja and Joseph Buttigieg as well as baritone Darren Vella sang some exerpts of Stainer’s work.
As usual this work was accompanied by Mro. Stephen Attard on the Xaghra basilica’s organ.
The Gaulitana: A Festival of Music continues on Tuesday 14th April with the Youth and Music concert at the Exhibition Hall in St. Francis Square in Victoria, promptly at 20.00 hours. The protagonists are three extremely talented youngsters namely Pierre Louis Attard of (violin) at 15 years of age, Philip Attard (saxophone) at 16 years of age, and Michela Galea (piano) at 13 years of age.
