After a forced absence of three years, the Gaulitanus Choir will be resuming its programme of international events with a concert tour of Vienna between December 9 and 14. Indeed, the choir’s last trip abroad was in November 2019, with all plans for subsequent engagements abroad aborted. Finally, the choir, led by its musical director Colin Attard, is back on track and roaring to go on its 20th venture abroad!
The concert tour, supported by Arts Council Malta, is being held with collaboration of Vienna’s TU Orchestra as well as the full co-operation of Vienna’s Persephone Choir. Both the TU Orchestra and the Persephone Choir will actually also be participating in various commitments in which the Gaulitanus Choir will be involved.
The Gaulitanus’s artistic engagements in this grand city of culture will commence in style. A lunchtime concert, featuring solely the Gozitan choir, will be held at Vienna’s monumental St Stephen’s Cathedral. Very significantly, and very much in line with the choir’s role as one of the foremost promoters of Maltese music abroad, the whole repertoire will consist of Maltese music.
Two Advent Concerts follow, one at St Peter’s Church – the second most important church in Vienna centre – and another at Mary, Queen of Martyrs Church in the city’s Rudolfsheim’s district. During both these concerts the Gaulitanus and the Persephone join forces in Yuletide excerpts – whether in German, Maltese or other languages. Apart from the ‘a cappella’ excerpts, the joint choirs will be accompanied by the TU Orchestra. The Gaulitanus will also present a slot of Maltese music on its own, whereas choir member Pierre Louis Attard will also be the guest solo violinist with the TU Orchestra during an orchestral slot. The concert will be jointly conducted by the Persephone’s musical director David Salazar and the Gaulitanus’s Colin Attard.
The Gaulitanus’s final commitment will be at the Kuppelsaal in Vienna’s Technical University. Indeed, the choir will be the special guests during the TU Orchestra’s grand symphonic concert performing a number of Maltese compositions.
