_Mro Colin Attard, the artistic director of Gaulitana: A Festival of Music, was very recently in Italy where he chaired the adjudicating boards at the 13th edition of the Concorso Internazionale per Giovani Artisti “Citta` di Massa”. The competition is organised by the Associazione Musicale “Diapason” with whom Gaulitana: A Festival of Music has an ongoing collaboration.
The competition, consisting of several different categories and held at Villa Cuturi, Marina di Massa, was brought to an end by a final concert featuring the participants awarded a 1st prize.
Competition apart, the organisers made it a point to present Mro Attard with a very inspiring opportunity. Very much aware of the Gaulitana’s efforts to duly commemorate the centenary of Giacomo Puccini’s death (particularly through the upcoming production of his best-loved opera ‘La Bohéme), they arranged visits to a few significant Puccini sights in the vicinity of Massa – whether his villa at Torre del Lago (where he composed most of his operas including ‘‘La Bohéme’) or his final home in Viareggio – where he was accompanied by the artistic director of the competition Dottoressa Elisa Pellegrini, and two key members of the organising team, Carla Mordan and Marco Podestà.
