Gaulitana: A Festival of Music is deeply saddened by the demise of Mro Giuseppe Fricelli, who passed away earlier today in his native Firenze, Italy after a long illness.
Fricelli was a very regular participant in the festival, his last appearance being in 2019 – before the pandemic disrupted all future plans -, establishing a very deep rapport with the festival and Gaulitana artistic director Colin Attard. One of his concerts at the festival (together with one of the pianists he mentored, Daria Aleshina) was also the subject of a live painting by Gozitana artist Anthiony Caruana.
Mro Fricelli was also always very keen to develop artistic collaborations with the festival. The have indeed resulted in a number of local artists appearing in concerts in Italy and in Attard himself often being invited to be a member of adjudicating boards chaired by Fricelli himself.
A pianist, composer, teacher, artistic director, and author, Giuseppe Fricelli was a most sensible musician, but, above all, a most humane person – affable, altruistic, generous and a true gentleman who always treasured sincere friendships. His musical endeavours, which have seen him perform worldwide either as soloists or in tandem with other pianists/musicians, had a particular penchant for discovering and encouraging new young talent – very much reflected in his long academic career and in the concerts and competitions which he artistically directed.
While we at Gaulitana fondly cherish the innumerable artistic experiences we shared, we forward our sincere condolences to his dear wife Paola and his family. May the good Lord, which he fervently sought throughout his life, grant him eternal rest.
