The Gauliana: A Festival of Music, 2008 edition, kicked off nicely on the 28th of March with a recital of the German organist, Mro. Wolfgang Hőrlin at the St. Augustine Church in Victoria.
Mro. Hőrlin comes from the rich Regensburg music tradition. He is a prizewinner in improvisation of renowned international organ compositions and has several CD recordings to his credit. He currently teaches organ performance, improvisation and film music composition at the National Academy of Music and Theatre in Munich.
Mro. HÅ‘rlin devoted the first part of his recital to the great German organ tradition playing Johann Sebastian Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D minor and Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme as Felix Mendelssohn-Bartoldy’s Sonata in F minor Op 65.1. During the second part of the recital he regaled the captive audience with some enthralling free improvisations on three well known sacred melodies by Maltese composer Giuseppe Caruana, manely variations on Fil-ħlewwa ta’ Mejju, a meditation on Nadurawk ja Hobż tas-Sema and a fantasia on the Innu ta’ fil-għaxija.
