The Gaulitanus Choir salutes the memory of ex-‘president’ John Scerri, who was very active during the choir’s first decade. At a time when the choir did not have an official committee or set-up, John, a baritone and a founding member of the choir, was very much in the forefront and practically was considered as the choir’s de facto president.
Amongst others, one recalls his design of the choir’s first logo and his involvement in two exchange programmes with foreign choirs which resulted in the Gaulitanus’s first two forays abroad – England in 1995 and Germany in 1997.
However, “il-President”, as he was fondly called in the choir’s circles, is surely best remembered for his inimitable sense of humour which, in particular, flavoured the choir’s social life – which he cherished – in an unparalleled way. Perhaps, this was best paraphrased in The Sunday Times of February 9, 1992, which, reporting on the choir’s festive season get-together, stated that he “read out a poem written for the occasion, outlining the choir’s commitments and achievements throughout 1991. Mr Scerri was also the main entertainer, singing in his original style, leading his companions in various sing-alongs”.
The choir forwards its sincere condolences to his family. May he rest in peace.
