‘Viva Verdi’, Gaulitana: A Festival of Music’s series of operatic scenes, is being aired on the national television station TVM2 next week. This extremely-successful 4-part virtual series of scenes from four of the best-loved operas by Giuseppe Verdi made up the second phase of the hybrid 14th edition of the festival and was premiered on the festival’s digital platforms in July and August.
Filmed on location in Gozo, this innovative project with cinematic dimension offers a ‘different’ audio-visual operatic treat and adds a completely new perspective to Gozo’s notable intrinsic link with opera.
Scenes from La Traviata, Rigoletto, Otello and La Forza del Destino spotlight sopranos Gillian Zammit, Monica Zanettin, Nicola Said, and Andriana Yordanova, and tenor Luis Aguilar and feature mezzo-soprano Joanna Pullicino and actor Rob Ricards. All are accompanied by the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra – with whose full collaboration the project was held – led by Marcelline Agius and conducted by the Gaulitana’s own artistic director Colin Attard. The scenes were directed by Denise Mulholland and filmed by Matthew Muscat Drago, with Andrew Borg Wirth charged with the sets, and Luke Azzopardi entrusted with the costumes.
La Traviata, Rigoletto, Otello and La Forza del Destino will be transmitted on Monday 30th August, Tuesday 31st August, Thursday 2nd September and Friday 3rd September respectively. All start at 18.30hrs. Meanwhile, ‘Viva Verdi’ remains available on the festival’s digital platforms.
Gaulitana: A Festival of Music, an annual festival organised by the Gaulitanus Choir and an awardee of the European Festivals Association’s EFFE label, is principally supported by the Gozo Cultural Support Programme of Arts Council Malta and the Ministry for Gozo.
