Qala’s Immaculate Conception Sanctuary, fittingly adorned for the upcoming feast of the Madonna, hosted another concert in the Gaulitana’s ‘A Capella Live’ series. On Wednesday 30th November, violinist Pierre Louis Attard and violoncellist Frank Camilleri took the festival stage in ‘Diptych’.
The programme featured quite unusual 20th and 21st century works, whether duos or solos. Attard played solo violin works by Elaine Fine, Gracyna Bacewicz and M. Epardo’s arrangement of two movements form Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana, whereas Camilleri performed Joseph Vella’s Miniatura for Cello Solo. The two Gozitan musicians then joined forces for two movements from Vella’s Ramblings (each movement presenting the two instruments individually), six movements from a Reinhold Gliere duo, and gave a premiere to Pierre Louis Attard’s own Duo for Violin & Cello composed earlier this year.
The concert was held in collaboration with the Qala Local Council, with mayor Paul Buttigieg and various councillors leading the audience, and courtesy of Qala Archpriest Mgr Edward Xuereb, who was also joined at the concert by some members of the parish’s presbytery.
