The Opening Concert at Gaulitana presented a double choral bill with the Gaulitanus Choir & String Ensemble alongside the Silesian Chamber Choir Ad Libitum.
The Gozitan choir ushered patrons into Holy Week with British-American excerpts as the Polish ensemble interpreted Faure’s powerful Requiem, his “pursuit of happiness in the hereafter”. The two concluding massed choir works, included the premiere a hymn by Pierre Louis Attard composed to celebrate the 800th death anniversary of Francis of Assisi.

SILESIAN CHAMBER CHOIR AD LIBITUM

St Margaret Parish Church, Sannat
On Palm Sunday, the Silesian Chamber Choir animated the Mass in English at Sannat accompanied by the recently-restored 1903 Cavalli organ.
The choir interpreted Mozart’s Coronation Mass, a masterpiece originally composed for the Easter period, as well as other liturgical hymns.

For its final appearance at the festival, the Silesian Chamber Choir Ad Libitum performed a selection of unaccompanied Polish numbers.
Blending sacred hymns with more secular works, the programme showcased the artistic dexterity of the ensemble as well as the musical traits of their homeland.

Maltese violinist Maria Conrad returned to Gaulitana, for a chamber concert with string colleagues from the Adda Simfònica Alicante.
The evening encompassed the European sonic tapestry with works by Beethoven, Dvorak and Taneyev alongside oeuvres by leading Spanish artistic figures – Astorga, Albéniz and de Falla.
Gaulitana runs from 28 March to 26 April
